Here at Piedmont Nissan we continued to be amazed by Nissan's ongoing capacity to give to others. Recently, the automaker began a program centered on constructing homes that are energy-efficient for people in the United States. The first energy-efficient house will be built in the greater Atlanta, Georgia area and will be funded by a grant. Volunteers from Nissan and a non-profit Habitat for Humanity chapter, Southern Crescent Habitat, will assist with the construction work.

Nissan and Habitat's sustainable building program have plans to build 9 other energy-efficient homes. After each home is completed it will be ENERGY STAR 3.0 certified. In terms of the ENERGY STAR rating system a 3.0 is a very impressive score.

So who gets to occupy this sustainable home? The lucky recipient of this house is Kenya Bouie. She is a single mom who has two children. She worked together with all of the volunteers and helped build her own home.

Reflecting on her journey toward becoming a proud homeowner, Keya indicates she learned a lot of valuable lessons. One: She is not alone in her housing struggle. Another, she says is "I learned what should be done in a home when something happens, how to fix it without having to spend money (to be) cost efficient and it helps me be independent."¹

This touching story is just one of many made possible by Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit which Nissan has been partnering with for seven years now, contributing, money, manpower and vehicles.
